Sustainable marketing

The internet’s carbon footprint makes up around 4% of all global greenhouse emissions  – the same as the entire airline industry. Every minute spent scrolling, chatting or streaming contributes to your digital carbon footprint.

Technology now reigns supreme in both our professional and personal lives with the continual buzz of our devices orchestrating the symphony of modern existence as we know it, and the number of connected devices is expected to increase further – reaching 55.7 billion by 2025.

In the spirit of innovation and accountability, we stand as vanguards of change and a beacon for sustainable marketing in this digital age. We are a collective of minds dedicated to harnessing cutting-edge strategies with environmental stewardship. Step into an era where sustainable marketing transcends preference, the moral compass guiding us towards a more symbiotic cohabitation with our beautiful planet Earth.

How can my business lower its digital carbon footprint?

Hosting

With servers, data centres and cooling systems all continuously burning through electricity, finding a company that uses renewable energy goes a long way to minimising the environmental impact of your website. Here are some recommended energy-efficient hosting companies – Kualo, Erjjio & our friends at Host Presto.

SEO

The faster you can be found online; the less time users spend scrolling through the energy-draining internet to find you. We optimise your content through keyword research, using on-site and off-site SEO best practices to improve your business’s visibility.

Web design

The more complicated your site design is, the more energy your site consumes when loaded. Each element – from the graphics and animations to typography and code – has a bearing on the energy footprint. We build and design websites using fewer critical resources and take a light and optimised approach towards code and content that improves site navigation and user experience.

Email

Emails with images produce 50g of CO2. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but it adds up when over 300 billion emails are sent daily. If each UK email users sent 1 less email a day, we could reduce emissions by 16,433 tonnes of CO2; the equivalent of 81,152 flights from London to Madrid. Our email campaigns are clean and strategic, optimising all images and using no unnecessary automation.

Social media

73% of global consumers say they would now change their buying habits to reduce their environmental impact. We thoughtfully create fresh and insightful content aligned with the core values of your target audience whether that be customers, employees or other stakeholders.

Circular values

If you’re looking to take your business to the next level, it’s time to stop solely focusing on your financial performance. At Growfish.co, we help businesses measure their success using the triple bottom line. Don’t just take our word for it – Unilever and IKEA have already adopted this approach. Ready to join the movement? Check out our values here.

Sustainable marketing FAQs

Sustainability definition

The concept of sustainability was prominently introduced in the landmark ‘Brundtland Report’ also known as ‘Our Common Future’, published by the UN World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. The report defined it in the following terms:

‘Sustainability refers to the capacity of systems, organisations, and practices to endure and thrive over the long term, while minimising the negative impacts on the environment, society, and the future generations. Sustainability involves the careful balancing of economic, social, and environmental considerations to ensure that resources are managed in a way that meets the present needs of society without compromising the ability of the future generations to meet their own needs.’

What is sustainable marketing?

Sustainable marketing is multifaceted— it’s a form of long-term marketing that focuses on lowering the negative impact of a business without compromising its economic development. Imagine a world where businesses are no longer just focused on profit, but also on protecting our planet for generations to come. Join us in this movement towards a better future.

What can marketers do to help communicate climate change?

Marketers are storytellers and we play a crucial role in communicating climate change and promoting sustainability. By aligning our efforts with the UN’s sustainable development goals, we can help minimise the environmental impacts of the internet and create a better future for all. It’s time to step up and raise standards across the board.

How is Growfish.co sustainable?

We believe that sustainability is a collaborative effort, and we’re here to help businesses do their part. As a sustainable marketing agency, we work with companies to identify areas of improvement and implement sustainable practices that reduce their environmental impact. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for everyone.

What are the five sustainable marketing principles?

When you’re first making the change to a sustainable marketing strategy, you may need to implement or at least consider the five principles of a sustainable marketing approach:

1. Consumer-oriented marketing: focusing on fulfilling consumers’ needs and wants in a sustainable manner

2. Customer value marketing: creating products and services that deliver superior value to customers while minimising environmental impact

3. Innovative marketing: promoting innovation in sustainable products, technologies, and practices

4. Sense-of-mission marketing: aligning a company’s mission and values with sustainability goals and communicating them to your customers

5. Societal marketing: promoting the betterment of society and the environment through sustainable practices and social responsibility.

Our long-term goal here at Growfish.co is to advance and grow through sustainable and ethical digital marketing initiatives that benefit both people and the planet. We want to continue to develop a community of purpose-driven business partners who balance profit with purpose.

What are B Corps businesses?

B Corporation certification is given to businesses that achieve a specific score against social and environmental standards. BCorp businesses must also meet a set of legal requirements including a commitment to considering the impact of their decisions on all  their stakeholders. We can help you work towards a B Corps certification, but in the meantime, don’t let the lack of certification dissuade you from working towards an eco-friendly future. You can adopt many methods to become more sustainable as a business; however, working alongside a marketing agency that represents and embodies a sustainable ethos will help steer your business goals in the right direction and make the transition to B Corp certification easier.
